TRIVIA

  • Gour was once the capital of Bengal under multiple dynasties including the Buddhist Palas, Hindu Senas, and Muslim rulers - spanning from the 8th to the 16th centuries.

  • Under the Ilyas Shahi dynasty and later Hussain Shahi rulers (14th–16th century), Gour was one of the wealthiest cities in the Indian subcontinent.

  • Gour began to decline after the Ganges River changed its course, and frequent plague outbreaks further led to its abandonment in the late 16th century.

  • The ruins of Gour stretch across 7 km, making it one of the most significant archaeological sites in eastern India.

KNOWN FOR

  • Dakhil Darwaza (Salami Darwaza):
    This majestic red-brick gateway from the 15th century served as the main entrance to the royal fort.

  • Bara Sona Masjid (Great Golden Mosque): This 16-domed mosque was constructed by Nasiruddin Nusrat Shah in the 16th century and remains one of Gour’s architectural highlights.

  • Firoz Minar: A 26-meter-high tower, built in the 15th century by Sultan Saifuddin Firoz Shah, often dubbed the "Qutub Minar of the East."

  • Qadam Rasul Mosque: This site is revered for housing what is believed to be a footprint of the Prophet Muhammad, encased in stone.

CLIMATE

  • Gour has a tropical wet-and-dry climate with three main seasons: 

  • Summer (March to June): 

Hot and humid, with average temperatures between 30°C and 42°C (86°F and 108°F). 

  • Monsoon (June to September):

Heavy rains and thunderstorms are common with an average rainfall: of approximately~1,500mm (53 inches) annually. Average temperatures between 26°C and 34°C (79°F and 93°F).

  • Winter (December to February):

Cool, dry and pleasant with low humidity with average temperatures between 10°C and 25°C (50°F and 77°F).
