TRIVIA

  • Agra is one of the few cities in the world to boast three UNESCO World Heritage Sites — the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri.

  • The white marble used in the Taj Mahal was sourced from Makrana in Rajasthan and transported by over 1,000 elephants.

  • Agra served as the capital of the Mughal Empire under emperors like Babur, Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan before the capital shifted to Delhi.

  • The Taj Mahal alone attracts 7 to 8 million visitors every year, including over 1 million foreign tourists, making Agra one of India’s top tourist destinations.

KNOWN FOR

  • Home to the Taj Mahal: Agra is world-renowned for the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

  • Agra Fort: Another UNESCO site, the Agra Fort, was built in 1573 by Akbar and served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors for decades.

  • Traditional Craftsmanship – Pietra Dura: Agra is famous for Pietra Dura, the intricate marble inlay work seen in the Taj Mahal, still practiced by local artisans today.

CLIMATE

  • Agra has a semi-arid climate, with hot summers, a distinct monsoon season, and mild winters:

  • Summer (March to June):

Very hot and dry, with intense sunlight and occasional dust storms. Average daily temperatures are between 35°C and 45°C (95°F and 113°F).

  • Monsoon (July to September):

Moderate to heavy rainfall, often bringing relief from the intense summer heat. Average daily temperatures are between 25°C and 35°C (77°F and 95°F).

  • Winter (October to February):

Pleasant and cool, with occasional fog, especially in December and January. Average daily temperatures between 8°C and 25°C (46°F and 77°F).
